Wetsuits and travel

How Is a Wetsuit Pattern Created?

At LOUM, the process of creating new designs takes months.
Every project begins with inspiration.

When looking at a finished wetsuit, it’s easy to focus on the colours, cut, or details. What often goes unnoticed is how much work goes into every pattern and how long the journey is from the initial idea to the final product.

Ideas often come from travel, industry trade shows, but are also influenced by our intuition and passion for design. Every shape is designed by us using graphic design software. This is the stage where the first mood boards are developed.

First Sketches

The next step is creating the pattern design. This is when an idea starts to take shape.

We consider:

  • how to combine aesthetics with functionality,
  • where the pattern should be placed,
  • how it will look on a woman’s silhouette,
  • which elements are worth highlighting.

Not every beautiful design works well on a wetsuit. A pattern needs to look great both on a computer screen and on the finished product. Developing a single pattern can take up to three months.

Working with the Factory

Once the design has been approved, the factory prepares the first samples. This is one of the most exciting stages of the entire process. We create our products from scratch, and the materials we use are custom-dyed specifically for us.

Every shade is selected by us.

It often turns out that changes are necessary. Sometimes it is enough to adjust a colour shade or move a pattern by a few centimetres. In other cases, modifications involve the cut, sleeve length, seam placement, or zipper finishing.

With new models, it is common for a product to go through several rounds of sampling before reaching its final form. Although this extends the process, it gives us confidence that the finished product will not only look beautiful but will also be comfortable and durable.

Before making the final production decision, we test prototypes. We assess their flexibility, resistance to repeated stretching, and how they perform after exposure to salt water and sunlight. The materials are compressed, stretched, and tested under conditions designed to replicate real-life use as closely as possible.

From Design to Water

Only after all samples have been approved does production begin.
The result of many months of work is a product designed not only to look good, but above all to provide comfort in use.

At LOUM, we believe that well-designed waterwear should combine functionality, high quality, and aesthetics.
Behind every wetsuit is a story, dozens of decisions, and hundreds of hours of work. It is this process that makes the finished product more than just a piece of equipment – it becomes part of the experience.
